About Garner History Museum at the Depot

The Garner History Museum at the Depot occupies a historic 1900 railroad depot moved to downtown Garner in 2019. Visitors explore exhibits about Garner's origins as a railroad town in the 1850s and learn about early residents including Henry Fort, an African American farmer and cabinetmaker who purchased land near the railroad in 1874. The museum features a red caboose, a landmark of the historic district and visitor favorite currently undergoing restoration. The facility hosts school groups and tours alongside individual visitors and new residents. The volunteer-staffed museum provides research resources including access to Ancestry.com and Newspapers.com, along with genealogy workshops led by experienced volunteers for those tracing family history. The Garner Area Historical Society, a nonprofit, operates the museum and holds periodic programs, exhibits, and events throughout the year. The depot stands at the intersection of Main and Pearl Streets in Garner, North Carolina, next to the Pearl Street Building, the former 1950s fire station.
