About Fort Apache Historical Park

Fort Apache Historical Park houses Nohwike' Bágowa, the White Mountain Apache Cultural Center and Museum, where visitors explore Apache heritage through long-term and temporary exhibitions. The museum is constructed to reflect a traditional gowa, or Apache holy home. Inside, the multimedia Creation Story plays within a traditionally built gowa at the museum's center, surrounded by rare Apache objects, historic photographs, and hands-on displays. The Fort Apache Legacy exhibit occupies an 1871 log cabin and presents the fort's history through photomurals, maps, and a period room depicting Army officer life. Visitors can walk a self-guided tour through twenty-seven historic buildings across the 288-acre National Register Historic District using maps from the museum. Apache arts demonstrations and special events occur regularly. The museum shop sells Apache basketry, beadwork, and other arts alongside books and tribal mementos. Apache tour guides are available by advance reservation. The park charges admission, with discounted rates for seniors and youth, and free entry for children under six and tribal members.
