About David Warther Carvings & Gift Shop
David Warther Carvings & Gift Shop in Sugarcreek showcases the intricate ivory and ebony wood ship carvings of David Warther II, a fifth-generation carver of Swiss heritage. Visitors tour the museum to view over 80 hand-carved miniature sailing vessels depicting maritime history from ancient Egypt around 3000 B.C. to modern times. Each carving features scrimshaw engraving and meticulously crafted ivory rigging made from threads hand-filed to seven-thousandths of an inch in diameter. David works daily in his on-site workshop, where he continues carving his "History of the Ship" series using designs from maritime scholars and researchers worldwide. The carvings are made from legal pre-ban antique ivory and ebony wood. The gift shop offers David Warther pocket knives and a book about the carver. The museum suits visitors interested in maritime history, traditional carving techniques, and detailed artistic craftsmanship. Located in Ohio's Amish country, the museum publishes its hours on the venue's website.
