Crawford House is an 1830 neo-classical mansion where visitors tour the preserved home of Captain David Crawford, a maritime entrepreneur and civic leader. The house stands on 500 acres overlooking the Hudson River in Newburgh and remains architecturally intact with original interior and exterior details largely unchanged since its construction. Visitors see forty-foot iconic columns on the front porch, Palladian windows, detailed woodcarving on the front door featuring oak leaves and pineapples, ornate black marble fireplaces, and an exquisite mahogany dolphin newel post on the sweeping center hall staircase. The house contains an impressive collection of Hudson River School paintings by artists including Charles Winfield Tice, Thomas Benjamin Pope, and Raphael Hoyle, along with nineteenth-century New York furnishings such as a Duncan Phyfe settee and a Carman and Fancher piano manufactured in Newburgh, locally made silver and textiles, and a collection of model ships from the golden age of Hudson River pleasure travel and shipping.
