Chicago Portage National Historic Site marks the western end of the historic portage that once linked the Great Lakes to the region's waterways, making it one of only two National Historic Sites in Illinois. Visitors hike and walk an unpaved loop trail that forms part of the larger Salt Creek Trail System, which extends 16.4 miles across multiple communities. The site provides access to views of a glacial valley, gravelly moraine, and Salt Creek's distinctive pool and riffle environment. An interpretive sign explains the portage's historical significance. Amenities include parking and an accessible portable bathroom. The trail accommodates hiking, walking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing, with leashed dogs welcome.
