About Cedar Hill Museum of History
The Cedar Hill Museum of History, located inside the Traphene Hickman Public Library in Cedar Hill, invites visitors to explore the region's natural and cultural heritage. The museum's centerpiece is Plessy, the fossilized remains of a Plesiosaurus dating back approximately 65 million years, representing Cedar Hill's earliest known resident. Visitors learn about the city's founding in 1846 by settlers from Peters' Colony who traveled by horseback and ox-drawn wagon along trails established by Indians, buffalo, and explorers. The museum presents how these early settlers transformed rugged territory into a thriving community through hard work and determination. Located at the 10-acre Library, Museum, and Signature Park campus in Cedar Hill's midtown district, the museum sits about 20 minutes from Downtown Dallas and 40 minutes from Downtown Fort Worth. The museum operates Thursday through Saturday with varying hours. General admission is free. The organization, founded as a nonprofit in 2006, welcomes volunteers interested in docent-led tours and educational programs.
