About Blue Heron Nature Preserve

Blue Heron Nature Preserve encompasses 30 acres of woodlands, wetlands, riparian areas, and meadows accessible via the 3-mile Blueway Trail in Atlanta's North Buckhead neighborhood. Visitors explore distinct habitats including native meadow restoration sites along the Painted Turtle trail and at Land O Lakes, where wildflowers, broom sedge, purple coneflower, and black-eyed Susan attract pollinators like monarch butterflies, bumblebees, and painted lady butterflies. The preserve hosts education programs, fine arts classes, and health and wellness workshops in activities such as yoga, birdwatching, sound healing, and herbalism. Wildlife sightings include eastern fence lizards, American goldfinches, eastern harvest mice, and black swallowtail butterflies. The trails feature inclines, rooted sections, and gravel pathways. General admission is free. Bicycles are not permitted on trails, though bike racks are available near the main building.
