About Woodlawn Farm

Woodlawn Farm is a living history museum in Jacksonville that tells the story of the Underground Railroad in central Illinois through the preserved farmhouse and grounds where founder Michael Huffaker and his family helped people escape slavery. Visitors tour the two-story brick farmhouse, built in 1840, which contains period artifacts including an 1870s cradle that belonged to the Huffaker family and a doorbell embossed with a historical date. The 10-acre rural property demonstrates mid-1800s farm life and operates as a self-supporting historic site managed by volunteers from the Underground Railroad Committee of the Morgan County Illinois Historical Society. The farm welcomes families and small groups for tours and hosts annual community events. A cash donation is appreciated from visitors. The site is operated by dedicated volunteers who oversee maintenance, educational programming, and special events that celebrate the courage of those involved in the Underground Railroad movement.
