About Small Eli Ferris Wheel

The Big Eli Ferris Wheel stands in Community Park in Jacksonville, Illinois, where visitors ride a working ferris wheel operated by the Jacksonville Rotary Club. The wheel on display is Big Eli #17, maintained and run by local volunteers. The attraction traces its history to 1893, when businessman W.E. Sullivan visited a world's fair and decided to build his own ferris wheel. Sullivan's Eli Bridge Company constructed the first Big Eli wheel and began manufacturing them in Jacksonville, where the original factory building still operates. The historic Big Eli #1 wheel stands in front of the factory as a monument to the city's industrial past. Visitors can ride Big Eli #17 on designated summer evenings, and the wheel is available for private parties through the Rotary Club. This attraction suits anyone interested in mechanical history and vintage amusement rides.
