About Wood River Refinery History Museum
The Wood River Refinery History Museum in Roxana documents over 100 years of petroleum production and the people who built the refinery serving the St. Louis area and Midwest. Visitors explore three buildings originally constructed between the 1930s and 1960s as part of Shell Research Laboratory. The main building contains kiosks displaying different periods of refinery history and employee activities, a video room showing historical events, and a 1952-1966 Mileage Marathon record holder achieving 168.47 miles per gallon. Building 2 houses a restored 1918 Shell tank truck, an octane-measuring engine, and a gasoline engine-driven fire pump. Building 3 displays wearables, safety equipment, and tools from the refinery's operations.
