The Ernst Quarries near Bakersfield comprises three distinct quarries sprawling across 260 acres at Sharktooth Hill, home to the world's largest deposit of Miocene marine fossils. Visitors dig for fossil specimens including sharks, rays, sea cows, and whales in areas developed for public access, while other sections remain designated for scientific exploration. Educational field trips accommodate groups of up to 50 students on select weekdays, with programs lasting four hours of fossil digging. The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History in Bakersfield conducts fundraising paleontology digs at the site for its members. Participants must be at least 10 years old. The property supports public participation and scientific research within the quarries themselves, serving as a paleontological resource for Kern County and the Bakersfield community.
