About The Ernst Quarries
The Ernst Quarries near Bakersfield comprises three distinct quarries sprawling across 260 acres at Sharktooth Hill, home to the world's largest deposit of Miocene marine fossils. Visitors dig for fossil specimens including sharks, rays, sea cows, and whales in areas developed for public access, while other sections remain designated for scientific exploration. The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History in Bakersfield conducts fundraising paleontology digs at the site for its members. Participants must be at least 10 years old.
