About Richardson Bates House Museum

Richardson Bates House Museum is a National Register historic house offering guided tours through a preserved 19th-century Italian Villa on Oswego's east side. Visitors spend approximately one hour exploring the opulent first-floor period rooms that reflect Victorian elite art and culture. About ninety percent of the original family furnishings remain on display, alongside the family's historic and ethnographic collections acquired when the house was gifted to the Oswego County Historical Society in 1946. The museum features Dr. Mary Edwards Walker's U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor on permanent display. Guests encounter ornate decorative arts, period textiles, and furnishings that showcase the wealth and refined tastes of the Richardson-Bates family. Current exhibitions rotate selections from the society's broader collection. The museum represents one of the most intact house museums in New York State, preserving authentic details of nineteenth-century domestic life and material culture for scholarly and public appreciation.
