About Museum of the Cherokee People
The Museum of the Cherokee People offers an immersive experience of Cherokee history, culture, and stories through exhibitions, collections, and educational programs. Visitors encounter displays spanning Cherokee heritage on the Qualla Boundary, the sovereign land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and ancestral homelands of all Cherokees. The museum hosts changing exhibitions featuring contemporary Cherokee artists and potters, such as the annual Didanisisgi Gadagwatli pottery showcase. Free programs include lectures on Cherokee history and stories led by storytellers and historians in the TJ Holland Education Room, as well as virtual conversations exploring First Voice research methodologies with archaeologists, historians, and journalists. The museum also offers adult group tours and school tours for visitors seeking guided experiences. A self-guided tour typically takes about one hour. Located in Cherokee, North Carolina, the museum operates daily and charges admission, with prices published online. Established in 1948, it ranks among the longest-operating tribal museums in the country.
