About Monks Mound
Monks Mound, located in Collinsville, Illinois, is the largest man-made earthen mound on the North American continent. Visitors climb this ancient structure, which rises approximately 100 feet and spans roughly 1,000 feet north to south and 790 feet east to west. The mound features four distinct terraces, with the first terrace being the most extensive, covering approximately 1.75 acres at the southern end. A unique bridge-like projection on the west side of the first terrace leads up to the third terrace. The mound received its name from Trappist Monks who lived on nearby mounds and gardened the first terrace and surrounding areas. This archaeological site represents a significant example of pre-Columbian earthwork construction. Monks Mound stands as a testament to the engineering capabilities of the Cahokia people and attracts visitors interested in Native American history and archaeology.
