About Meadow Garden

Meadow Garden in Augusta is a historic house museum dedicated to George Walton, a Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence. Visitors take guided house tours exploring Walton's journey from carpenter's apprentice to lawyer and Revolutionary leader. At 26, he became one of the youngest Declaration signers, fought in the Revolution, suffered battle wounds, and was captured as a prisoner of war. His wife Dorothy was also held captive by the British. The museum examines how American women shaped this site, highlighting Dorothy Walton and the enslaved woman Cloe, both seized at sea during the Revolution, and Walton's granddaughter Octavia, who helped preserve the property. Meadow Garden is a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Group tours and field trips are available.
