Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena in Newark offers public skating sessions where visitors rent figure or hockey skates and skate recreationally on the ice. The arena hosts public skate times open to all ages and skill levels. Beyond casual skating, the facility runs the Blue Jackets Learn To Play hockey program, teaching skating, passing, and stickhandling while emphasizing teamwork and responsibility. Figure skating programs include the Basic Skills Academy for recreational and competitive skaters of all ages, freestyle practice sessions for all disciplines of figure skating, and instruction from coaches who work with each child's individual learning style. The arena also offers Stick and Puck sessions where hockey players practice skating, stick handling, shooting, and passing. Monthly Homeschool Skate sessions provide exercise in a safe environment with other homeschool families. Birthday parties can be arranged using the public skate or a full private rental. The facility underwent major renovation in 2005 and a locker room expansion in 2016.
