About Latimer House

Latimer House is a museum preserving upper-class family life in the 19th-century Cape Fear region. Visitors take one-hour guided tours through the 14-room Italianate Revival mansion built in 1852, which contains more than 600 historical relics from the mid-1800s. Docents lead guests through opulent rooms displaying original art, furniture, and clothing while sharing stories of the Latimer family. The estate features formal Victorian gardens with period-appropriate plants, shrubs, trees, an iron fountain, and slate pathways enclosed by original lace-brick walls. A restored enslaved quarters building exhibits artifacts recovered by archaeologists. The on-site Ida B. Kellam Memorial Archive offers access to documents, books, and photographs for genealogical research and scholarly study. The house hosts seasonal events including classical music performances, history workshops, and art exhibitions. Latimer House is located in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Tours are offered Tuesdays through Saturdays, with tickets sold online through the venue's website.
