About Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center

The Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center preserves the history of a town built by the railroad. Visitors walk through the historic 1917 depot building and examine artifacts dating from 1917 to 1965, experiencing what a typical day at a train stop involved during that era. The depot traces its origins to 1880, when Captain Fergus Kyle donated land to the International and Great Northern Railroad, which established a water stop and townsite that grew into the community of Kyle. The current building replaced an earlier depot destroyed by fire in 1916, when station clerk Robert Parks saved shipments and records by throwing them from windows. The structure was relocated in 1951 to allow downtown access to Highway 81. Through exhibits and artifacts, the center documents the depot's role as a hub for shipping cotton and cattle from the surrounding prairie region and tells the story of the railroad workers and families who made Kyle their home.
