The Irvine Historical Society & Museum in Irvine preserves the rich heritage of the Irvine Ranch, once one of the largest private ranches in the United States. Visitors explore the transformation of Irvine's landscape and the families who shaped it, from Native Americans through the rancho era to the Irish American Irvine family. The museum traces how James Irvine I and two partners purchased Mexican and Spanish land grants in 1864, and how James Irvine II transformed the property into an agricultural powerhouse. Exhibits document the ranch's evolution from sheep grazing to bean cultivation, and later Myford Irvine's vision for residential development, including his creation of coastal communities in Newport and Laguna Beach. Street names throughout modern Irvine—Portola, Culver, Michelson, Jeffrey, and Jamboree—serve as historical markers.
