View →About Imperial Valley Desert Museum
The Imperial Valley Desert Museum in Ocotillo preserves and interprets Indigenous and historic artifacts from the region through exhibits that engage visitors both indoors and outdoors. Exhibits include archaeology displays featuring grinding stones, ceramic sherds, and stone debitage that archaeologists use to understand the area's history. Rock Talks panels describe hikes and geology, showing actual rock formations used as exhibit models. Adaptation Cases highlight three ways Native Americans survived in the extreme Imperial Valley landscape. Visible Storage displays Southern California ollas alongside video content on traditional Kumeyaay ceramic arts. The museum occupies land traditionally inhabited by the Kumeyaay and other Indigenous groups including the Quechan, Cahuilla, CoCoPah, and Pai Pai, whose histories span over ten thousand years. The facility welcomes visitors Wednesday through Sunday, with children under eighteen admitted at no charge.
