Historic Fort Phantom Hill preserves a frontier military post from the 1850s in Jones County. Visitors explore the 38-acre site on a self-guided tour, examining three original stone buildings including an intact powder magazine, a stone guardhouse, and an almost-intact commissary. More than a dozen stone chimneys and stone foundations scattered across the grounds reveal the fort's layout. Informational signs label landmarks throughout the site, and free brochures help interpret the history. The fort was occupied by the U.S. Army from 1851 to 1854 and later damaged by fire, yet substantial structures remain for inspection and study. Open daily from dawn until dusk, the site offers ample parking and public restroom facilities. General admission is free. Parts of the fort are wheelchair accessible, though trails are unpaved and uneven. Dogs are permitted. The fort is located in Abilene, Texas, as part of the Texas Forts Trail, a 650-mile highway tour of historic West Central Texas forts.
Admission is free. The venue says: “The site is a self-guided tour and is free of charge.”
Hours: Daily from dawn until dusk
