About Fort Foster State Historic Site

Fort Foster State Historic Site is a reproduction of a fort originally built on the same grounds by Col. William S. Foster and his men during the Second Seminole War. The fort once defended the bridge crossing at the Hillsborough River and served as a resupply point for soldiers in the field. Park staff and re-enactors provide living-history demonstrations showing what life was like at the fort, with two special events held throughout the year featuring people in period costume. An interpretive center displays over 100 artifacts discovered at the site, with exhibits explaining the conflict between the Seminole nation and the U.S. military. Visitors can tour the reproduction fort, which includes blockhouses and rough terrain requiring careful footing. The site operates by guided tour and special event only, not as a daily-access attraction. Fort Foster is located in Thonotosassa on the east side of U.S. 301, adjacent to Hillsborough River State Park.
