About Countryman Family One Room Schoolhouse

Countryman Family One Room Schoolhouse transports visitors back to 1852 by recreating the educational experience of Florida's earliest schoolhouse. Guests sit at authentic wooden desks and participate in interactive lessons covering the three Rs while learning period life skills like carrying water jugs from a local well. The building is patterned after the original 1852 Lykes School, the first schoolhouse built in Hernando County, and features added modern conveniences including electricity and a wheelchair ramp for accessibility. The schoolhouse was built following a decade-long fundraising campaign by former docent Gretchen Countryman, an elementary school teacher. Construction began in 2014 after the fundraising campaign concluded. Visitors experience hands-on history education in the style of nineteenth-century rural Florida schools. Countryman Family One Room Schoolhouse is located in Brooksville, Florida.
