Coarsegold Historical Museum, operated by the Coarsegold Historical Society, preserves the region's gold mining heritage and early settlement history. The museum's centerpiece is a historic adobe building, designated a historical landmark, that once served as a way station on the original stagecoach road to Yosemite. Visitors examine a unique collection of artifacts and historical items focusing on Eastern Madera County from prehistoric through historic times. The exhibits document the area's transformation from a major mining center during the 1849–1865 gold rush, when Coarse Gold Gulch reportedly had 10,000 residents, to a ranching and agricultural community. Displays highlight early businesses including Converse and Stalls' 1851 supply store and the Walker Brothers' operation selling provisions to miners. The museum grounds preserve the Kennedy Barn and sit on property once crossed by the historic Yosemite Stage Road, later Highway 41. The facility, staffed entirely by volunteer docents, is located on Highway 41 in Coarsegold, California, south of the town center.
Admission is free. The venue says: “We always offer FREE ADMISSION.”
