Captain White House, Graham

About Captain White House

The Captain White House in Graham is a Queen Anne Revival mansion built in 1873 that now houses the Alamance Arts Council, serving as both a historic site and cultural venue. Visitors tour the meticulously restored ten-room home while viewing rotating visual art exhibits displayed throughout the house. The property showcases original architectural details including wooden frame and clapboard siding, a brick foundation, and a slate roof. The interior features historical lighting systems, from the original candles and lamps to gas fixtures added in the 1890s and the open ceramic-insulator electrical wiring installed after electricity arrived in Graham in 1905. The house includes large front and back halls and porches, along with period features like rotary switches and pull-cord controls. A 1998 renovation preserved the home's historical integrity while updating mechanical systems. The site suits visitors interested in late-nineteenth-century architecture, local history, and regional art, offering a glimpse into both domestic life and artistic programming.
