About Butte County Historical Society

Butte County Historical Society operates a museum and archives dedicated to preserving the region's Gold Rush heritage and local history since 1956. Visitors explore artifact collections and rotating exhibits that document the social, political, economic and cultural heritage of Butte County residents. The museum displays objects relating to the area's 1851 Gold Rush and early settlement. The archives contain photographs, documents, maps, published materials, scrapbooks and historical ephemera available for research. The society maintains three historic structures: the Ehmann Home, a local schoolhouse, and Bangor Church. The museum staff includes trained docents who lead tours through the collections. A bookstore offers publications about local history. The archives serve both casual visitors and researchers tracing family histories or investigating specific aspects of Butte County's past. The organization is headquartered in Oroville, a Gold Rush capital in the region.
