About Braceville African American Heritage Museum (“Baahm”)

The Braceville African American Heritage Museum, known as "The BAAHM," preserves and shares the history of the Braceville Township Underground Railroad, the Great Migration, and African American contributions to Ohio. Visitors explore historical exhibits displayed in the Museum House, originally built in 1923 by Dan Shavers, great uncle of heavyweight boxing contender Earnie Shavers, whose family made their first Ohio home there. The exhibits highlight local and regional figures including Ted Toles Jr. of the Negro Baseball League, author Brian Broome, pit master and barbecue sauce expert Guy Hughes, and boxing legend Randy Stephens. The museum aims to raise public awareness of Braceville's crucial role as an Underground Railroad stop and sanctuary during the Great Migration, showcasing points of pride and unity for local notables and residents. Located approximately three miles from Newton Falls and eight miles from Warren, the museum serves statewide youth and lifelong learners seeking to access African American historical information and engage with Ohio's heritage.
