About Bexar Heritage Center

Bexar Heritage Center in San Antonio presents exhibits about Bexar County's history and development. Visitors explore multimedia portals and multilayered displays that trace the region from ten thousand years ago through the 1800s. The center features Story Maps sections showing the county's early geography and how it evolved into its current shape. Exhibits examine Spain's administrative protocols and record-keeping practices in the New World, the arrival of the railroad in 1877 that stimulated economic growth, and the county's reputation as a health destination. The center documents the history of successive Bexar County Courthouses, beginning with Casa Reales from the 1700s. Additional exhibits showcase the county's modern investments in art venues, sports facilities, cultural parks, natural habitat restoration, and flood control infrastructure. A visit involves walking through immersive displays that connect past governance structures to contemporary regional development. General admission is free.
