About AXP Museum
The AXP Museum preserves the history of the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home, which operated from 1869 to 1995. Visitors explore artifacts, records, memories and stories from children who lived at the home after losing parents in the Civil War. The museum occupies a Memorial Library building on the grounds of the former institution in Xenia. Exhibits document how the Grand Army of the Republic founded the home to care for orphaned children when county infirmaries could not meet the need. The museum displays photographs, personal items and historical documents related to residents and the home's operations. Visitors learn about the Association of Ex-Pupils organization, which continues to maintain the museum and support child advocacy. A director and volunteers staff the facility. The museum suits anyone interested in Ohio Civil War history, veteran affairs, or local heritage. Special tours can be arranged by appointment for groups or individuals seeking a deeper experience.
