The Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum displays art representing African American history and culture through exhibitions and educational programs. Founded in 1996 by visual artist and community activist Shonna McDaniels, the museum preserves Black history and celebrates African American accomplishments and legacy. Visitors explore exhibitions including displays on Black Cowboys, revealing that the first authentic cowboys were African American slaves, contrary to Hollywood portrayals, and exhibitions on Black Inventors, documenting African American inventors and scientists who created practical everyday devices. The museum offers group tours, youth docent programs, and art education classes. Programs and videos are available for deeper learning. Named after abolitionist and civil rights advocate Sojourner Truth, the museum continues her mission of promoting equality. Located in the Florin Business Arts Complex in Sacramento, the museum operates by appointment and during scheduled times.
Hours: Thursday - Saturday 12:00 - 5:00 pm; Wednesday by appointment; Monday/Tuesday and Sunday closed
