About Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site
Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site in Paris preserves a Victorian home where visitors take guided tours through rooms that reveal how an upper-middle-class family lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Guides lead visitors through the parlor, den, dining room, and bedrooms, where newly restored interiors display original family furnishings, clothing, and letters spanning three generations. The home belonged to Samuel Bell Maxey, a Mexican War veteran and former Confederate general who later became a U.S. Senator. The family occupied the house beginning in 1868 and witnessed Reconstruction's challenging legacy through the start of World War I. Tours depart at the top of each hour, with the last tour beginning at 3 p.m. The site offers public tours and special events, along with school programs for educational groups. The historic house is located on South Church Street in Paris, Texas.
