About Saline County Area Museum (Saline Creek Pioneer Village and Museum)

The Saline County Area Museum, operated by the Saline County Historical Society, preserves the history of the region through a pioneer village spread across 3.5 acres in Harrisburg. Visitors explore a self-guided tour of historic structures including the Pauper House, a brick building from 1877 that now serves as the museum, along with a jail cell from the original county jail, the Chenault School House, a General Store, the Davenport Cabin, a Blockhouse, a Mystery Cabin, a Blacksmith Shop, the Aydolette Barn and Cabin, and the Cain Church. The grounds originated from the Saline County Pauper Farm, established on 175 acres purchased by the county in 1863 during the Civil War. Visitors read informational signs outside each building while moving through the village at their own pace, making the experience suitable for those interested in local and Southern Illinois history and pioneer-era architecture and daily life.
