About Rastin Observation Tower
Rastin Observation Tower at Ariel-Foundation Park offers visitors one of the most unique vantage points in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The tower is a steel spiral staircase that wraps around a historic 280-foot industrial smoke stack built by PPG in 1951. The observation deck sits 140 feet above ground after climbing 224 steps, providing sweeping views of Knox County. The concrete chimney, constructed using the slip form method, operated as a PPG facility from 1951 until the company's closure in 1979. The tower's concept was designed by park project director Ted Schnormeier and Custom Cutters of Mount Vernon, made possible through a generous donation by Tom Rastin. Located next to the Urton Clock House on Pittsburgh Avenue, the tower stands as part of The Ruins within the 250-acre Ariel-Foundation Park. A visit involves climbing the spiral staircase to access the highest publicly available view of the region's landscape.

Admission is free. The venue says: “There are no admissions or parking fees. The Rastin Observation Tower, park museum, picnic pavillions, trails and other park features are free and open to the public.”
