Providence Metropark in Grand Rapids, Ohio preserves the history of the Miami and Erie Canal as it existed in 1876. Visitors step back in time at the Canal Experience, where period-dressed characters welcome guests to explore canal-era features. The park includes the Volunteer, a reproduction mule-drawn canal boat that operates on the waterway. The Isaac Ludwig Mill, a working water-powered saw and gristmill, demonstrates 19th-century milling techniques. More than a mile of the original canal and towpath remains intact, along with Lock 44, one of the last functioning limestone locks from that era. The Providence Dam, built across the Maumee River to maintain canal water levels, is also visible. A Heritage Center allows visitors to observe the Volunteer and Lock 44 in action. The park operates seasonally, with canal boat rides and mill tours available on varying schedules. Admission is charged, with tickets sold online through the park's website.
