About Our Legacy Museum

Our Legacy Museum presents the historical and cultural experiences of Griffin-Spalding's African-American community within regional and national contexts. Visitors explore featured stories including the Legacy of Fairmont High School, Civil Rights in Griffin, and Rosenwald Schools through interactive exhibits housed in the restored 1929 Rosenwald School building. The museum tells the history of the Fairmont neighborhood, established in 1927 as the first area in Griffin where African-American families could purchase land and build homes. Exhibits cover the Rosenwald Fund-supported school's creation in 1929, the educational expansion with new buildings in 1949 and 1958, and the community's experiences following school integration in 1970. The museum interprets how the original six-teacher school grew into Fairmont High School over four decades. A visit suits anyone interested in African-American history, education, and civil rights.
