The Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through fascinating exhibits. Visitors explore displays of prehistoric plants and animal fossils, exhibits on native peoples and European colonization, and a steamboat replica. The museum's Rio Grande Legacy permanent exhibit sequence features three sections with bilingual text and state-of-the-art displays. The River Frontier section illustrates the area's geological origins, ancient animals and plants, native peoples, and European encounters. River Crossings introduces the rapid changes of the 20th century. The museum also preserves the Old Jail, built in 1910 and one of the museum's most important sections. The facility expanded significantly in 2003, adding a 22,500 square foot wing that includes a Museum Store and Grand Lobby. Visitors of all ages interested in regional history, from prehistoric times through modern eras, will find detailed narratives of cultural heritage and cross-border connections.
