About Museo 956

Museo 956 de Derechos Civiles is the Rio Grande Valley's first civil rights museum, operated by the Save the San Juan Hotel Collective in San Juan, Texas. The museum develops a restorative public history model that provides access to healing narratives about the region's past. Visitors explore exhibits and histories related to the San Juan Hotel, a registered Texas Historical Landmark, and its role in white settler colonization of the Rio Grande Valley at the turn of the twentieth century. The museum draws on knowledge from community elders and addresses the historical consciousness surrounding this period. The collective opened the museum after a 2025 event sharing these histories attracted over three hundred people, revealing strong public interest in the region's civil rights narratives. The museum operates during afternoon and evening hours Wednesday through Sunday at its location on Business 83 in San Juan.
