About Mohawk Valley Heritage Railroad
Mohawk Valley Heritage Railroad operates small-gauge trains from a station near the historic Fort Bull site in Rome, offering 45-minute scenic rides throughout the season. Visitors board the little trains, which are currently powered by a small "critter" type locomotive while the railroad's historic steam locomotive undergoes refurbishment. The railroad plans various themed events and occasions for families throughout its operating calendar. As one of only two railroads in New York with an operable steam locomotive, Mohawk Valley Heritage Railroad preserves the region's transportation heritage dating back to the 1842 Watertown & Rome Railroad. The attraction, reopened in 2024 through a partnership with Erie Canal Village, focuses on railroad preservation and steam technology education. A visit suits families seeking a hands-on experience with working trains and local history. Tickets are sold online through the venue's website.
