About Mansion On James

Mansion on James is a historic house museum in Syracuse where visitors take guided historical tours through an 1853 mansion, the only remaining James Street mansion open to the public. The house tells the story of a way of life from the nineteenth century through intricate architectural details and exhibits about the Underground Railroad and the Freedom Trail. Visitors learn about the mansion's role in the abolitionist movement and its significance to Central New York history through educational programs and seminars. The building itself serves as a community gathering space, and guests may volunteer as docents or groundskeepers to support preservation efforts. The venue is located in Syracuse, New York, and operates under the George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation, a nonprofit historical organization dedicated to maintaining the property as a community treasure.
