About Lowndes County Historical Society & Museum

The Lowndes County Historical Society & Museum in downtown Valdosta preserves and shares the region's rich heritage through permanent and rotating exhibits. Visitors explore displays highlighting local people, industries, and culture, including collections focused on turpentine and pine gum operations, the 1888 Cotton Exchange, and the Twin Lakes Resort Pavilion fire. The museum occupies nearly 10,000 square feet within a 1913 Carnegie Library building on the National Register of Historic Places. Archives and a research library contain twenty-six collections of documents, photographs, and artifacts available for on-site study, with research assistance provided. School groups and community visitors can arrange guided or self-guided tours customized for specific grade levels or interests. The museum is free and open to the public. Researchers and genealogists use the facilities regularly to study local history and family records.
