Junction Earthworks Preserve spans 266 acres in Chillicothe and protects two Hopewell-era earthwork complexes: Junction Earthworks and Steel Earthworks. Visitors hike trails from sunrise to sunset across the preserve, observing selectively mowed ancient mounds made visible through interpretive signage and enhanced by a free smartphone app. The preserve features 100 acres of riparian and hillside forest, a 70-acre planted prairie displaying wildflowers including coneflowers, bee balm and asters, and opportunities for birdwatching. Paint Creek borders the property for 1.25 miles, with riparian forests along its banks. The site suits hikers and nature observers interested in Ohio's indigenous heritage and native plant communities, framed by Appalachian hills. The preserve opens for independent exploration throughout daylight hours.
