About Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center
The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center sits on 233 wooded acres near the Mall of Georgia in Buford. Visitors explore indoor educational exhibits including the Water Ways diorama and the Discover H20 interactive display, then venture outdoors to the Treetop Quest ropes course and five miles of walking trails. A wooded pavilion offers picnic space, and the historic Chesser-Williams House provides a glimpse into the area's past. The center building itself demonstrates environmental innovation as Gwinnett's first LEED-certified structure, featuring the Southeast's largest sloped vegetative roof and pervious pavement throughout the grounds. Water features include a waterfall wall and a natural stream where tadpoles and turtles inhabit the ecosystem. The center was developed through partnership between the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, the Board of Education, and the University of Georgia, creating a cultural space for environmental learning and outdoor recreation.
