About Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge

Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge, Florida's last surviving House of Refuge, offers immersive exhibits and coastal heritage experiences following its recent restoration. Visitors walk through The Tempest, an installation on the lower level where audio and Ralph Papa's mural recreate the conditions of violent storms at sea, with sound effects of crashing waves, thunder, snapping sails, and creaking timbers that convey the desperation faced by sailors. Fresh exhibits throughout the House reveal lifesaving stories and the building's unique place on Florida's Treasure Coast, while dedicated docents lead tours connecting guests to the people and traditions that shaped the landmark's 150-year history. The Boathouse Gift Shop offers maritime treasures, coastal keepsakes, books, and House of Refuge souvenirs. Located in Stuart, the museum charges admission with prices published online and tickets sold through the venue's website. Active-duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserves, plus up to five family members receive free admission from mid-May through early September through the Blue Star Museums program, according to hsmc-fl.com.
