Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville is a historic house museum housed in one of the nation's finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture. Visitors tour the restored building to learn about the eight governors who lived there from 1839 to 1868, including George Crawford, Howell Cobb, and Joseph E. Brown. The mansion interprets the complex history of the antebellum period, Civil War, and Reconstruction, exploring slavery, class systems, and gender roles in nineteenth-century Georgia. A comprehensive restoration completed in 2005 returned the building to its 1851 appearance under Governor Howell Cobb, recreating the original layout, colorations, and design. Tours focus on the lives of both the free residents and enslaved people who inhabited the mansion during its years as Georgia's official governors' residence. The building, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, sits on the Georgia College campus as the institution's founding and most treasured structure.
