Lockerly Arboretum in Milledgeville is a 50-acre botanical garden where visitors walk trails, hike through woodlands, and explore diverse plant collections including flowering shrubs like camellias and azaleas, native oaks and magnolias, perennials and annuals. A one-mile nature trail winds through mature hardwoods, ferns and wildflowers, passing Georgia State Champion trees such as a Tall Stewartia and Cedar Elm. Visitors can watch birds and wildlife, enjoy picnics near the pond, and attend Saturday reptile information sessions at the Woods Museum. The grounds include Rose Hill, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1852 that serves as a museum with guided tours available. Education programs serve approximately 3,000 children and adults annually, with hands-on activities aligned to Georgia Performance Standards, Eagle Scout requirements, and Master Gardener certifications. Adult workshops and lectures occur throughout the year. General admission to the gardens and grounds is free, with extended Saturday hours during spring and summer months.
