About Chappie James Museum of Pensacola

The Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr. Museum in Pensacola honors the life and military achievements of Daniel James Jr., the first African American four-star general in the U.S. Air Force. Visitors explore exhibits documenting James's remarkable career, from his early interest in flying through the Civilian Pilot Training Program at Tuskegee Institute to his service as a combat pilot in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The museum traces his rise through the military ranks, his command of NORAD/ADCOM at Peterson Air Force Base overseeing air defense for the United States and Canada, and his final role as special assistant to the chief of staff. James was born in Pensacola in 1920 and became known for his professionalism and grace under pressure. The museum operates Wednesday through Saturday with specific published hours. Groups larger than fourteen require advance appointments. The museum is located in Pensacola, Florida.
