About Canal Boat Landing Monticello III
The Monticello III is a working historic canal boat pulled by draft horses along the Ohio & Erie Canal in Coshocton, at Lake Park near Roscoe Village. Visitors board for a 45-minute ride along a mile of the canal and back, seated in a covered, comfortable boat. Two draft horses named Diesel and Tim pull the boat along the towpath, exactly as crews did in the 1830s. A captain narrates the journey, recounting stories of canal life and history, including tales of "canal rage" among boat crews. The Ohio & Erie Canal, completed in 1832 and stretching over 308 miles across Ohio, was an engineering feat dug entirely by hand. Most of Ohio's canal system is now trails and dry land, making this one of the few places where the canal still operates on water. Before or after the ride, visitors can explore Lake Park on foot, walking the towpath and discovering the remnants of Locks 26 and 27.
