About Tifft Nature Preserve

Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre nature refuge on Buffalo's Outer Harbor dedicated to conservation, education, and access to nature. Visitors explore trails and boardwalks through woodlands, ponds, and a large cattail marsh, where they may spot birds of prey and native wildlife. The three-quarter-mile accessible trail accommodates wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers on compacted stone-dust paths and a rebuilt boardwalk through the scenic marsh. The Herb & Jane Darling Environmental Education Center operates Wednesday through Sunday and provides trail maps, restrooms, and drinking fountains. The preserve offers Wellness Walks, guided full moon walks, wilderness survival workshops, kids-only night events, and seasonal programs like a children's Halloween party. Visitors can fish catch-and-release on designated lake shores, picnic near the Education Center, and borrow snowshoes when snow reaches six inches. General admission is free. The preserve transformed from an industrial site and landfill beginning in 1976 and now operates as a department of the Buffalo Museum of Science.
