About Thoreau Wildlife Reserve

Thoreau Wildlife Reserve near Defiance is a 250-acre nature preserve where visitors explore restored ecosystems including wetlands, prairie, hardwood forest, and old growth forest. The property features Walden Pond, created by an on-site dam, and a seeded meadow alongside the pine plantation. Guests walk through these diverse habitats to observe the many species of wildlife and plants that inhabit the reserve. The land serves as an outdoor classroom and sanctuary, with students and faculty from Defiance College conducting ecology studies across the property. The reserve opened to the public in 2020 following decades of restoration work by the Diehl Family Foundation, local workers, and volunteers who transformed former farmland into a functioning natural landscape. Visitors seeking education, inspiration, and time in nature will find the reserve an oasis set within the surrounding farmland of northwest Ohio.
