About Rock Island Railroad Museum
The Rock Island/Santa Fe Depot Museum in Chillicothe preserves the history of railroading through exhibits housed in an 1889 Rock Island Railroad depot building and a 1929 Santa Fe caboose displayed alongside it. Visitors explore the depot's original interior, which contains Santa Fe and Rock Island railroad memorabilia. A fully operational model railroad chugs around the former baggage room, offering a working demonstration of miniature rail transport. The museum is operated by the Chillicotte Historical Society, staffed by volunteers dedicated to collecting and displaying articles relating to local history. General admission is free. The depot museum is located at the corners of Third and Cedar Streets. Hours are published on the Historical Society website. The museum suits both children and adults interested in railroad heritage and the industrial history of the region.
